26° 1.5′ N · 77° 24.0′ W · approximate

Sandy Point is home to the Bahamas Marine Mammal Research Organisation, and the deep water off South Abaco - where the seafloor drops into the Great Bahama Canyon - holds resident beaked whales, year-round sperm whale nursery groups and several dolphin species you may meet from your own boat.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: the BMMRO base at Sandy Point settlement; sightings happen offshore in Northeast Providence Channel and off the east and southwest coasts. Species: bottlenose dolphins (most common, year-round), Atlantic spotted dolphins (groups of 20-50, year-round), Risso's dolphins (winter-spring, Atlantic side), short-finned pilot whales (peak spring-summer), sperm whales (female nursery groups year-round, males in winter), Blainville's and goose-beaked whales (deep canyons near Sandy Point), dwarf and pygmy sperm whales, occasional killer whales (late spring-summer).
