Resurrection Bay Whales and Wildlife (Resurrection Bay)
59° 58.2′ N · 149° 21.0′ W · approximate
Humpback whales and orcas are regularly seen in the bay, along with harbor and Dall's porpoises, sea otters and sea lions. Boaters must keep to federal approach rules around whales.
Practical
Position is an arbitrary point in the middle of the bay; sightings range across the whole of it. NOAA's rule within 200 nautical miles of Alaska bars approaching within 100 yards of a humpback whale by any means, including positioning a vessel in the path of an oncoming whale, and requires slow, safe speed near whales. The NPS asks boaters to stay at least 100 yards from marine mammals in general. Sailing vessels are covered by the same rule.
