Young Island Cut Moorings

13° 7.9′ N · 61° 12.1′ W

A narrow, clear-water channel between Young Island's resort and Villa Beach on the mainland, crowded with moorings and the most popular yacht stop on St Vincent's south coast.

Practical

Noonsite position 13 07'56"N, 61 12'08"W. The cut is open at both ends but gives good protection from most directions, and you can enter from the south (through Calliaqua Bay) or from the west (between Young Island and Indian Bay). Most boats take a mooring from one of the local operators. Noonsite warns that moorings here have failed, so inspect the pennant and dive the ground tackle if you can. Noforeignland reviewers report good holding but a rolly anchorage, bar noise at weekends, constant sales pitches, and mooring help from operators who expect payment; agree the price and the operator's name first. Security: Noonsite says yachts continue to be boarded and burgled here when left open and unattended, and cruisers recommend someone staying aboard and a rotating night watch. Fuel, groceries and buses to Kingstown and Calliaqua are all close ashore.

Best for

Swimming, dinner ashore and the Fort Duvernette climb, close to Kingstown

Season

Year-round; can be rolly in southerly swell
