Tyrrel Bay Mangrove Hurricane Hole (Oyster Bed)

12° 27.5′ N · 61° 29.2′ W · approximate

Tyrrel Bay's mangrove lagoon, part of the Sandy Island/Oyster Bed Marine Protected Area, has long been Carriacou's traditional storm refuge. Hurricane Beryl in July 2024 showed its limits, leaving more than 30 boats wrecked in Oyster Bed.

Practical

Coordinate is a general position in the north-east part of Tyrrel Bay (approx). The sources used do not give the exact lagoon entrance, so get local guidance from Carriacou Marine before relying on it. Wikipedia notes yachts use Tyrrel Bay to shelter from hurricanes, and Carriacou Marine charges its monthly mooring customers US$100 to move boats in and out of the mangroves for each named storm (2026 tariff). Doyle Guides (via Noonsite, Feb 2025) report that more than 30 vessels wrecked in Oyster Bed by Beryl were removed, and that authorities are moving against boat dumping and abandonment in mangroves. The area is a marine protected area, so expect restrictions; ask the SIOBMPA rangers. Hurricane season runs June to November. Beryl crossed Carriacou as a Category 4 on July 1, 2024. Many cruisers now prefer hauling out (with tie-downs) or moving south to Grenada or Trinidad; noforeignland advises being ready to run to Trinidad if a system threatens.
