Tyrrel Bay Anchorage

12° 27.4′ N · 61° 29.3′ W · approximate

Carriacou's big, sheltered south-west bay and the cruising hub of Grenada's Grenadines: a gently shelving sand-and-weed bottom with room for scores of boats, Grenada's northern port of entry, two boatyards, chandleries and a waterfront of bars and cafés at Harvey Vale.

Practical

Coordinate is in open water inside the bay, about 350 m off the shore, derived from the OpenStreetMap 'Tyrrel Bay' bay polygon (approx). Noonsite (updated Feb 2025): good, protected anchorage, depths 3-5 m over a gently shelving sand/weed bottom, room for 60-100 boats, but swinging room is shrinking as mooring fields spread and there is a lot of debris on the seabed. A 2015 cruiser log notes 'a couple of tricky shoal patches' and that it took two attempts to set the anchor; dive on it. Moorings are mostly run by boat boys at around US$20 a night (Noonsite); a 2018 cruiser was moved off one boat-boy ball to another, and a noforeignland review quotes EC$80 a night, so agree the price first or anchor. Carriacou Marine rents its own inspected buoys (see that entry). Dinghy docks: at Tyrell Bay Marina (north end), on the main ferry dock and at Carriacou Marine (south-west side, beside Customs). Many Hurricane Beryl wrecks have been removed (Doyle via Noonsite), but noforeignland reviews (updated Jan 2026) still mention derelict boats taking up anchoring space. Security: Noonsite reports dinghy theft as a major concern, including chain-locked dinghies; lift and lock at night. Entrance hazards: abandoned fishing net at the entrance and no lit buoys (see the Tyrrel Bay Approach passage). Clear in at Carriacou Marine before going ashore elsewhere.

Best for

First or last Grenada stop: clearance, duty-free fuel, provisioning and a safe sleep

Season

Year-round; protected from the trades. Open to the west, so uncomfortable in rare westerly swell or a passing tropical system
