Store Bay Snorkel (Kariwak Reef)

11° 9.3′ N · 60° 50.5′ W · approximate

A small, shallow reef on the south (left-hand) side of Store Bay, a short swim from the beach or the anchorage, with parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish and stingrays on the sand.

Practical

Position is a point about 45 m off the south shore of Store Bay (OpenStreetMap coastline), derived from Snorkel Around the World's description of Kariwak Reef on the left side of the beach (approx). Shallow and gently sloping; Discover T&T says the clear, calm water suits swimming and snorkelling, and DAN divers found sea hares and porcupinefish on a night dive in under 15 ft here. Heavy traffic: glass-bottom boats, jet skis and yacht tenders cross the bay all day, so tow a high-visibility swim buoy (Snorkel Around the World) and stay out of the boat lane. Lifeguards patrol only the flagged swimming area (Rough Guides). Gear rents at Store Bay and Pigeon Point for about US$10 a day (Rough Guides, undated; verify locally). Buccoo Reef proper is a restricted marine park: no snorkelling there from your own boat or dinghy.

Best for
