Schœlcher Anchorage

14° 37.1′ N · 61° 6.3′ W

A pleasant, ferry-free alternative to the Fort-de-France anchorage just 5 km west, off the black-sand beach of Anse Madame and Schœlcher's town dock, with the island's busiest sailing school zipping around the boats.

Practical

ActiveCaptain (2024): easy anchoring in 20-25 ft just north of the park and town dock. The dock is a bit high and rough but has cleats and ladders, so bring a stern anchor. There is a sandy shelf either side of the town dock (ActiveCaptain 49091 at 14.60584, -61.09705 off Case Navire). Rolly at times with slow swell even when it looks flat (2019), but good wind protection and no ferry wakes. Watch out for the many sailing-school boats from the Cercle Nautique de Schœlcher. Grocery stores, restaurants, a microbrewery near the theatre, and buses or taxis to Fort-de-France (10-15 minutes). Schœlcher is a labelled 'Station Voile' sailing resort (Martinique tourism). Not subject to the Baie des Flamands time limit, which applies to the Fort-de-France bay only.
