Grand Marché Couvert (Fort-de-France Covered Market)
14° 36.3′ N · 61° 4.3′ W
The 19th-century metal market hall in the centre of Fort-de-France, scented with cinnamon and vanilla, where madras-clad stallholders sell spices, rhums arrangés, homemade jams, tropical fruit and crafts.
Practical
Martinique tourism's market guide describes it as a 'sensory explosion' under the 1885 metal hall. Position from OSM (Grand Marché). It is a short walk from the waterfront; there are also produce markets at Marché Max Ransay (14.60912, -61.07337) and Marché de l'Asile (OSM). For bulk provisioning, Noonsite and ActiveCaptain point to the Leader Price near the waterfront and the Carrefour in the mall reached via the pedestrian street, and the big malls and hypermarkets a bus ride out of town. Go in the morning for the best fruit, vegetables and fish.
Best for
