Cathédrale Saint-Louis (Fort-de-France)
14° 36.3′ N · 61° 4.2′ W
The seat of the Archdiocese of Saint-Pierre and Fort-de-France, whose slim spire rises over the old town grid. The church on this site has been rebuilt again and again after fire, hurricanes and earthquakes since the first thatched shelter of 1671.
Practical
Wikipedia: burned by the Dutch in 1674 and rebuilt in stone from 1678 to 1685 under Governor de Blénac, then damaged by a tidal surge in 1766 and an earthquake in 1839, among other disasters. Seat of the archbishopric since 1967. A short walk inland from the waterfront and La Savane.
Best for
A quick cultural stop in the old town
