Sargassum Strandings (Atlantic coast)
14° 29.9′ N · 60° 49.3′ W · approximate
Mats of brown sargassum seaweed drift in from the Atlantic and pile up on windward beaches and bays. As they rot they give off an unpleasant smell, and the floating weed can foul raw-water intakes.
Practical
Coordinates are approximate, at Grande Anse Macabou, one of the beaches hikers report as affected. Visorando hikers noted sargassum smell at Cap Macré, Cap Ferré and the Macabou beaches, with town crews clearing Petite Macabou endlessly. Outremers360 reported the threat of massive sargassum strandings hanging over the 2026 Tour des Yoles programme. Strandings vary from year to year. Check engine raw-water strainers often in affected bays, and anchor upwind of rotting mats. Photos also show sargassum on the Grande Anse du Diamant (Anchorages.co).
