Prickly Bay Anchorage

12° 0.0′ N · 61° 45.8′ W · approximate

Prickly Bay is the wide south-coast bay off Lance aux Epines and the unofficial headquarters of Grenada's cruising community. Hundreds of boats anchor and moor off a boatyard, two chandleries, a marina pizza bar and a surf break.

Practical

Position is approximate, in mid-bay between Noonsite's entrance position (11°59'38"N 61°45'48"W) and the head of the bay, checked to be in the water. Anchoring: 5–15 m with good holding in sand and mud. Anchoring within 200 m of the north beach is prohibited. Swing moorings can be rented from the marina (Noonsite, 2024–25). The bay is wide open to the south, so expect continual roll. Melon on the Go reports roll that can last for days. In a tropical storm the bay can become untenable and the moorings are not rated for storm loads, so move east to the reef-protected bays or into the Lagoon. Dinghy docks: the west-side dock at Spice Island Marine/Budget Marine (for buses, taxis, Ace Hardware and the university); the east-side Prickly Bay Marina dock, which Noonsite reported destroyed by Hurricane Beryl (check whether it has been rebuilt); and a main dock on the south side. At night watch for unlit boats and empty moorings, and for the three big steel channel posts near Spice Island, one of which killed a cruiser in a night collision in December 2017. CSSN logged 7 Grenada incidents in 2025, down from 17 in 2024. Most were thefts of dinghies, outboards and loose gear; lift and lock everything at night. CSSN recorded dinghy thefts here in February, July and August 2024 and in June 2026, the last one a locked dinghy taken while the owner slept aboard. Cruisers' net: VHF 66 (international) at 7:30 am Monday to Saturday; most boats stand by on 68.
