Morne Fortune Viewpoint
13° 59.7′ N · 60° 59.9′ W · approximate
The hill above Castries where the French and British fought over the island; the ruins of Fort Charlotte and the Inniskilling Monument look down over the harbour, Vigie and the north-west coast.
Practical
Position is the OpenStreetMap place node for Morne Fortune (approx; the lookout and Fort Charlotte buildings are spread along the ridge). Renamed Morne Fortuné in 1765 when the French moved their headquarters here; the fort changed hands several times between 1794 and 1803 and stayed British until independence in 1979 (Wikipedia). Reach it by taxi or bus from Castries; combine with the market and the Pigeon Island history day. Derek Walcott's grave lies at Fort Charlotte (Wikimedia Commons image caption).
