Leeward Coast Whale and Dolphin Watching
13° 14.1′ N · 61° 17.4′ W · approximate
The deep water off St Vincent's leeward coast holds resident pods of spinner, bottlenose and common dolphins, plus pilot whales, with sperm whales and humpbacks passing in season.
Practical
Coordinate is derived (approx): a point about 2 nm off Barrouallie in the deep leeward water where the tours run. SVG Tourism lists humpback, sperm and pilot whales and spinner, bottlenose and common dolphins; the best time for whales is December to April, sightings are possible all year and dolphins are very likely, but whales are not guaranteed. AFAR adds that sperm whales and humpbacks usually pass from October through January. Tours: Fantasea Tours (Arnos Vale) and Sea Breeze Nature Tours. Under sail, keep a lookout on the run along the coast, slow down near pods and do not chase or split them. Note that Barrouallie still runs a traditional hunt for blackfish (pilot whales); in 2017 whalers killed orcas in front of a tour group (iWitness News).
