Jardin de Balata
14° 40.3′ N · 61° 5.5′ W
A remarkable tropical garden on the Route de la Trace, about 10 km north of Fort-de-France, with more than 3,000 plant species, hummingbirds and rope walkways 15 m up in the canopy looking over the bay and the Pitons du Carbet.
Practical
Created in 1982 by horticulturist Jean-Philippe Thoze around his grandmother's Creole house, open since April 19, 1986, and classed as a Jardin Remarquable (Wikipedia; Martinique tourism). Now owned by the Tropical Forest Park group, which also runs the Martinique zoo at Le Carbet. Reach it by car or taxi from Fort-de-France. Easy walking on paved and gravel paths; the canopy walkways are the main thrill. Position from OSM.
