Horseshoe Reef

12° 38.3′ N · 61° 20.8′ W · approximate

The great horseshoe-shaped barrier reef that encloses four of the five cays, with elkhorn coral, sea fans, parrotfish, grunts and small barracuda on its shallow inside edge.

Practical

Coordinate is derived: the lagoon side of the reef east of Baradal, from OpenStreetMap reef outlines. Snorkel the inshore (lagoon) side from a dinghy; Snorkeling Report advises against swimming out to it from Baradal. The ocean side is a scuba site (about 60 ft; nurse sharks under ledges) and must be dived with a local operator. Dinghies cannot anchor in the park, so tow the dinghy or have someone drive. Currents and chop increase with the trades; stay inside the reef.
