Grenada Summer Hurricane Base (insurance and haul-out)

12° 0.3′ N · 61° 44.0′ W · approximate

For decades Grenada has been where Caribbean cruisers sit out hurricane season, in reef-protected south-coast bays, the St George's Lagoon and big boatyards. But it is not hurricane-proof: Ivan in 2004 and Beryl in 2024 both hit hard.

Practical

Position is nominal (Clarkes Court Bay, the main summer anchorage). Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30 (Le Phare Bleu hurricane plan). History: Hurricane Ivan struck Grenada as a strong Category 3 in September 2004, causing catastrophic damage. Hurricane Beryl, an early Category 5 in July 2024, devastated Carriacou, Petite Martinique and Union Island. Insurance: check your policy's named-storm and latitude clauses before you plan to stay. Noforeignland advises confirming cover first, and a 2010 Caribbean Compass article quoted by Dietrich said Grenada was no longer far enough south for most insurers. Many cruisers continue to Trinidad or haul out. Haul-out: Spice Island Marine (70 t), Clarkes Court (242 t), Grenada Marine (70 t, 32 ft beam) and a new Mount Hartman yard (2025, 44 t, 32 ft beam). Book storage before June, because yards fill (Noonsite). In the water: Port Louis (a recognised hurricane hole), Secret Harbour, Le Phare Bleu (bad-weather moorings, guardianage contracts required) and the mangrove bays of Clarkes Court and Port Egmont. Prickly Bay becomes untenable in a tropical storm. Leaving the boat unattended: CSSN recorded clusters of burglaries on unoccupied moored yachts in Mount Hartman Bay in August and September 2026, so hire a minder who checks weekly and remove valuables.
