Anse La Raye Anchorage

13° 56.4′ N · 61° 2.8′ W · approximate

An open roadstead off the fishing village of Anse La Raye, two miles south of Marigot Bay, where you can drop the hook in settled weather and dinghy to the village jetty for the Friday fish fry, the waterfalls behind the village and a slice of everyday St Lucian life.

Practical

Position is about 300 m west of the village jetty, derived from the OpenStreetMap coastline and the mapped pier (OpenStreetMap way 1308836479, at about 13.9403°N, 61.0438°W); it is not a charted or surveyed anchorage. No published depths, holding description or moorings were found for this bay, so sound your way in and anchor on sand clear of the fishing boats, moorings and seine nets off the beach. The bay is open to the west and only partly sheltered from the trades by the land; treat it as a daytime or settled-weather stop and leave if a northerly or westerly swell sets in. Land the dinghy at the jetty on Front Street (the fish fry is held on the street near the jetty) and do not leave it unattended overnight; Noonsite and CSSN report dinghy thefts along this coast, including in nearby Marigot Bay. Ashore (OpenStreetMap): small convenience stores and a bakery, rum shops and bars, a post office, police station, health and wellness centre, and a Sol fuel station on the main road at the north end of the village (road fuel only; carry jerry cans). There is no customs here: clear in at Rodney Bay, Castries, Marigot or Soufrière first. Many crews instead stay in Marigot Bay (about 2 nm north) or on the Anse Cochon moorings (about 1 nm south) and come by dinghy in calm conditions or by taxi (about 25 minutes from Castries by road). Anse La Raye Waterfalls and River Rock Falls are reached on daily tours from the village (Saint Lucia Tourism Authority).
