Sun Bay Anchorage (Vieques)
18° 5.6′ N · 65° 27.5′ W · approximate
The broad bay of Ensenada Sun Bay, one cove east of Esperanza: charter boats tuck into its eastern side for snorkeling and a long beach walk.
Practical
Position is approximate: inside the eastern half of the bay, using OpenStreetMap's Ensenada Sombe label and beach outline. Coast Pilot 5: about 0.6 mile wide, anchorage in 18 to 24 ft, exposed to winds from southeast to southwest; depths in the south half 17 to 27 ft. Hazards: a shoal extends 200 yards west from the east point; a 17-ft shoal lies west of the middle of the entrance; several sunken rocks lie about 100 and 250 yards west and southwest of the east entrance point, so do not cut that point. Noonsite reports good holding and shelter on the east side. Sail Caribe's itinerary anchors on the eastern side; its 2026 page also mentions moorings there (status unconfirmed). Swell can wrap in when the trade wind goes south of east.
Best for
A quieter alternative to Esperanza with a long beach
Season
Settled east to northeast trades; avoid in southerly winds
