Humpback Whale Season (BVI north shore)

18° 28.5′ N · 64° 37.8′ W · approximate

From roughly December to April, North Atlantic humpbacks migrate south to the West Indies to calve and mate, and charter boats in BVI and USVI waters see them on passages, most often in March and April.

Practical

Reference position approximate: open water off Tortola's north shore, north of Brewers Bay, chosen as a lookout area for north-side passages (Jost Van Dyke to Guana, Anegada runs); no BVI-specific sighting hotspot was verified. Season: about December to April, peak March and April (Island Roots Charters, citing whale expert Ted Cheeseman); NOAA Fisheries confirms the winter migration to the West Indies. Rules of thumb: keep at least 100 yards (NOAA) or 100 m (Island Roots) away; do not cut across a whale's path; go slow and predictable; if a whale comes within 100 yards, stop and slowly move away.
