Seasonal· St Thomas· Virgin Islands (BVI, USVI and Spanish Virgins)
Humpback Whale Season
18° 23.8′ N · 64° 54.5′ W · approximate
Humpback whales pass through Virgin Islands waters in the winter breeding season, and the deep water off the north shore and around the outer cays is where they are seen.
Practical
Position approximate: off the Hans Lollik Islands on the north shore, as a reference point. Season: roughly December to April, peaking in March and April (Island Roots Charters); Wikipedia's Hans Lollik article gives peak migration January through March and notes bottlenose dolphins and occasional pilot whales. Keep at least 100 m (about 100 yards) from whales, slow down, and let them approach you; whales are usually farther offshore in deeper water.
Best for
Whale sightings on north-side and offshore passages
Season
December to April; peak February to April
