Great Pond Bay Anchorage

17° 43.1′ N · 64° 39.2′ W · approximate

A reef-protected bay on the otherwise exposed south coast of the East End, between Milord Point and Mount Fancy: one of the few places on that shore where the Coast Pilot gives a keelboat anchorage.

Practical

Position approximate: the OSM label for Great Pond Bay. Coast Pilot: good anchorage for vessels of 10 ft draft in hard sand. Entrance range: the east tangent of Milord Point in line with Sight Mill; when about 100 yards off the point, turn to 064 degrees, pass west of a 7 ft shoal 200 yards east of Milord Point, run 0.3 mile and anchor in 13 to 14 ft. Mount Fancy (245 ft, a conspicuous double hill) forms the east side and Fareham Hill (192 ft) the west. The whole south coast from East Point to Long Point is fronted by a broken, dangerous reef: enter only in good light with a lookout. Great Pond itself, ashore, is part of the East End Marine Park.
