Gallows Bay Anchorage (Christiansted)

17° 45.0′ N · 64° 42.0′ W · approximate

The southeast corner of Christiansted Harbor, off the Gallows Bay ferry and cargo docks and St Croix Marine: the overflow anchorage when Protestant Cay is full and the harbor's traditional storm anchorage.

Practical

Position is approximate, placed north of Gallows Bay Dock (Coast Pilot 17 44 57 N, 64 41 57 W) in the dredged turning basin area. The Coast Pilot says small boats anchor in Gallows Bay and along the east side of the harbor, and that during a hurricane or gale vessels anchor in Gallows Bay; the 2022 survey found 12 to 17 ft in the turning basin with less water along its northeast, southeast and southwest edges. OpenSeaMap/OSM charts three wrecks just northeast of the dock (about 17.7495 N, 64.6977 W): keep clear. A 2019 Noonsite cruiser report anchored here when Protestant Cay was too crowded and liked the walk into town. Keep the ferry (QE IV) and cargo berths clear. Fuel, water, pump-out and chandlery are at St Croix Marine next door. Same DPNR anchoring-permit rules and dinghy-security advice as the main anchorage.
