Hurricane season (St Croix)

17° 45.0′ N · 64° 42.2′ W · approximate

St Croix sits in the hurricane belt: since 1950 at least 27 tropical cyclones have passed within 50 miles, 23 of them in August and September; Hugo (1989), Marilyn (1995), Georges (1998) and Maria (2017) all did serious damage.

Practical

Position approximate: Christiansted Harbor. Season June 1 to November 30, peak August to October (NPS). The Coast Pilot gives 41 inches of rain a year, a quarter of it in August and September, and notes that June to September, when the trade is light, strong southwesterly squalls with heavy rain can occur. Storm options: Gallows Bay is the Coast Pilot's gale anchorage for Christiansted; small boats use Salt River Bay; Green Cay Marina markets storm protection. NPS moorings must be vacated when winds of 40 mph or more are forecast. The St Croix Yacht Club runs a four-phase storm plan from June 1.
