Culebrita Lighthouse

18° 18.8′ N · 65° 13.6′ W

A Spanish-era lighthouse completed in 1886 on Culebrita's summit, now a roofless, storm-wrecked ruin; the hike up from Tortuga Bay rewards you with views over Culebra, the cays and St Thomas.

Practical

Position: OpenStreetMap 'Faro de Culebrita' (node 3404864796); Wikipedia gives 18°18′49″N, 65°13′39″W. Wikipedia: construction 1882–1886; deactivated in 1975 and replaced by a solar beacon; Hurricane Hugo (1989) caused extensive damage and Hurricane Marilyn (1995) destroyed the tower; it is reported in danger of collapse, so do not climb inside. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1981). Coast Pilot: Isla Culebrita Light is 305 ft above the water. FWS maps an official refuge trail and an unofficial one on Culebrita: use the official trail. Refuge open 6 am to 6 pm. Take water and shoes: it is hot and rocky.
