Anegada Conch Mounds (Conch Island)
18° 41.3′ N · 64° 16.6′ W
Mounds of discarded conch shells rising like dunes out of the shallows off Anegada's East End: shell middens begun by the Arawak people and added to by fishermen for more than 200 years. Nurse sharks, rays and turtles hang around the shell piles.
Practical
Position from the BVI Tourism listing. Not reachable by charter yacht because of the surrounding reefs: go with a local tour operator (The Moorings; BVI Tourism). Teamwork Charters' powerboat trip round the island stops here with conch ceviche and snorkelling (Anegada Beach Club), and Yacht Warriors recommends stopping at the conch mounds on the way back from a Horseshoe Reef tour. Yacht Charter Fleet describes nurse sharks, turtles and stingrays around the shells.
Best for
A boat-tour stop for one of the Caribbean's strangest landscapes
