Anegada Rock Iguana Headstart Facility

18° 43.3′ N · 64° 19.2′ W

A National Parks Trust rearing facility in The Settlement for the critically endangered Anegada rock iguana (Cyclura pinguis), found wild only here: hatchlings are raised safe from feral cats until big enough to survive, then released.

Practical

Position is the facility building mapped in OpenStreetMap. The wild population is estimated at fewer than 300 (Wikipedia); the joint recovery programme began in 1997 with the Fort Worth and San Diego zoos, and Wikipedia's Anegada article says more than 200 headstarted iguanas have been released; an annual Iguana Festival is held. Access is not guaranteed: a 2012 visitor found it locked and not open to the public; other guides list it as a stop. Ask locally or contact the BVI National Parks Trust (bvinpt@bvinpt.org) before you go.
