Tanote Bay Moorings

10° 5.0′ N · 99° 51.0′ E · approximate

A small, boulder-framed bay in the middle of Tao's east coast, with a fringing reef, an artificial reef of reef cubes, blacktip reef sharks and a big rock for cliff jumping.

Practical

Position approximate: the OpenStreetMap coordinate for the bay (Ao Tanot), not a surveyed mooring; the SE Asia Pilot does not describe Tanote separately. Crystal Dive: 2–18 m fringing reef plus reef cubes that shelter shy creatures and help coral regrow, blacktip reef sharks and the occasional giant barracuda; good for beginners. New Heaven Dive School names Tanote among the east-side sites that stay calm when the wind is westerly (June–October). Koh Tao's orange public moorings are free; each is designed for up to three moderate-weight vessels in reasonable weather, and dive boats may tie to your stern for a couple of hours while diving (SE Asia Pilot). Where mooring lines are laid, assume coral or artificial reef beneath; anchoring is a last resort and damaging coral can bring prosecution and fines. Do not anchor on the artificial reef. Open to the east, so untenable in the NE monsoon.
