Samui Buffalo Fighting Festival
9° 30.0′ N · 100° 0.0′ E · approximate
Samui's traditional buffalo fights, staged on festival days such as New Year's Day and Songkran: two bulls lock horns for a couple of rounds before big crowds, with ribbon-decked animals blessed by monks beforehand.
Practical
Wikivoyage: held on special occasions such as New Year's Day and Songkran; the season follows old customs and ceremonies; the buffalo are decorated with ribbons and gold leaf, monks sprinkle them with holy water, and the contest lasts just two rounds; winning owners can take home large prize money. Unlike Spanish bullfighting it is described as fairly harmless, though animal-welfare views differ. Position is a generic central-Samui point: the venues are inland village arenas and none was verified, so ask locally for dates and the arena on the day.
Best for
A traditional island spectacle on New Year's Day or Songkran
