Loy Krathong on the Krabi River

8° 3.8′ N · 98° 55.2′ E · approximate

On the full-moon night of the twelfth Thai lunar month, people float krathongs (small candle-lit floats of banana stem and flowers) on rivers and the sea to give thanks to the water; Krabi Town's riverfront, beside the town anchorage, is a natural place to watch.

Practical

Position approx: the Krabi Town riverfront by the pier night market and the all-tide dinghy dock, the natural vantage point for boats anchored in the river; the main venue changes, so verify locally. Dates (Wikipedia): November 24, 2026; November 13, 2027; November 1, 2028. Expect thousands of floats and candles drifting on the ebb that night and the morning after: keep a sharp lookout, avoid running the engine through float clusters, and watch the prop and water intake. Sky lanterns and fireworks are increasingly restricted in Thailand; do not launch them near the airport approach.

Best for

Watching the river fill with candle-lit floats
