Koh Po & Talat Lanta Anchorage

7° 33.0′ N · 99° 6.2′ E

The sheltered east-coast anchorage off Lanta's Old Town, between the small islands of Koh Po and Koh Klang, with a stilted Chinese-Muslim waterfront, cheap seafood and the island's hospital and post office ashore.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot (54 nm from Ao Chalong): moderate protection in the SW monsoon. The best overnight spot is the large area between Koh Klang and Koh Po in about 5 m on mud, which holds better; off the village jetty the bottom is fine mud and less reliable, and the Pilot warns that holding in the bay is so poor someone should stay aboard on anchor watch. A very dangerous rocky patch, usually submerged and hard to spot, lies about 500 m north of the village: approach from the south and leave Koh Po to starboard. The public jetty is badly maintained (rusty nails); come in by dinghy only from mid-tide upward. Diesel and gasoline in small quantities, food stalls and a supermarket near the jetty, several good inexpensive seafood restaurants. Lanta Marine Services, based here, rents proper laid moorings and can help with most mechanical problems.
