Koh Lawa Yai Beach

8° 7.5′ N · 98° 26.7′ E · approximate

White sand alternating with rocky stretches around a small island where you can walk the whole shoreline at low tide, with hermit crabs, cockles and clams on the flats.

Practical

Position approximate: the island centre (Wikidata/GeoNames); the source does not say which side of the island the main beach is on, so pick your landing by eye. Thai tourism listing (TrueID): sand beaches alternate with rocky sections, the whole island can be walked round at low tide, and there is a nature trail. It is in Ao Phang Nga National Park with a ranger unit on the island. Day-tour catamarans from Phuket stop here with water slides and paddle boards, so expect company in the middle of the day. Take all rubbish back to the boat.

Best for

A low-tide walk round the island and a quiet swim
