Emerald Cave (Tham Morakot), Koh Muk
7° 22.2′ N · 99° 17.0′ E
An 80 m pitch-black sea tunnel through Koh Muk's cliffs that opens into a hidden lagoon and white-sand beach ringed by jungle walls.
Practical
Swimmers only: kayaks and dinghies are not permitted in the tunnel (Southeast Asia Pilot), though Wikipedia notes kayak entry by tours; follow the buoyed guide line through about 80 m of total darkness into a chamber about 60 m across. Bring a reliable waterproof torch. Wikipedia: best at mid-tide (at low tide the inside lagoon is dry); the emerald light shows from about 10am to 2pm. Go first thing in the morning before the tour boats arrive. Park fee 400 THB per person, collected by rangers who visit the boats (Southeast Asia Pilot; verify locally). The entrance is marked by mooring buoys with ropes leading in. Hat Chao Mai National Park area.
