Ao Salak Phet Anchorage

11° 58.7′ N · 102° 22.8′ E

Koh Chang's largest and most sheltered bay, a shallow inlet in the southeast split by two small islands and ringed by a fishing village and mangroves. It is the charter-fleet base and the best all-year hidey-hole in the archipelago.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot waypoint 11°58.706N 102°22.828E, 15 nm from Khlong Son. The bay is generally shallow. Anchor in the west of the bay in 3–4 m for good all-year protection. On the west shore are Koh Chang Marina (about 15 pontoons), the Salak Phet Seafood pontoons and Bang Rong Than Pier (see separate entries). Ashore: accommodation, fuel, internet, water, laundry and adequate shops in the village at the head of the bay. There are no major repairs: go by motorbike or ferry to Trat. The wreck of a Thai warship from the 1941 naval battle lies between two yellow buoys east of the bay, off a long beach. Approaching from Bang Bao, stay outside the 12 m contour.
