Andaman Sea Southwest Monsoon (May–Oct)

7° 51.0′ N · 98° 48.0′ E · approximate

From May to October the southwest monsoon brings rain, squalls and swell onto the west-facing Krabi coast and Phi Phi. The Pilot calls the Krabi region 'completely exposed', and many anchorages that are idyllic in the dry season become untenable.

Practical

Position is a nominal point in the middle of the subregion. NE monsoon (Nov-Apr): dry, steady NE winds, calm western shores; the prime season. SW monsoon (May-Oct): warmer and wetter, with swell and reduced visibility on western shores (Pilot). SW-season shelter in this area: Ton Sai Bay and Yongkasem (both seasons), Laem Tong, Loh Moo Dee and the Phi Phi Don east-coast bays, the southeast side of Chicken Island, Railay East and the Krabi River marinas. Ao Nang is unsuitable, with waves around 2 m. Boats run less often and are cancelled in bad weather; Maya Bay closes August to September.
