Ste Anne Marine National Park

4° 37.0′ S · 55° 30.0′ E

Declared in March 1973 as the first marine protected area in the Indian Ocean, this park of six islands, coral reefs and one of the largest seagrass meadows in the granitic islands sits 10 minutes by boat from Victoria; green turtles graze the seagrass and hawksbills nest on Ste Anne.

Practical

Coordinate is Wikipedia's park centroid (low precision; use your chart for the boundaries). Islands: Ste Anne, Moyenne, Round (Ile Ronde), Long (Ile Longue), Cerf and Ile Cachée. Non-resident entry SCR 200 per person per day (12 and over) and SCR 250 per yacht for an overnight mooring (SPGA, 2026); rangers come to the boat and take card only, or prepay at spga.gov.sc/tickets. Hours 8am-5pm daily (SPGA visitor page; the park page still says 9am). Anchor or moor only in designated areas; no fishing, spear guns, fishing gear or traps aboard in the park; no collecting shells or coral; no water-skiing or motorised water sports; watch for snorkellers. Restricted: Ste Anne nesting beaches (Grand Anse, Gran Manon, Petit Manon, Anse Cimitière). The Moorings says anchoring is permitted and paid moorings lie on Ste Anne's south side. Expect heavy day-tour traffic from Eden Island and Victoria. Cruisers (2009) noted the per-person fee makes it pricey for a family.

Best for

Turtles, easy snorkelling and a first night out of Eden Island

Season

Year-round; Ile Cachée dive site only in the NW monsoon
