Moyenne Island (Grandpa's Island, tortoises and museum)

4° 37.2′ S · 55° 30.5′ E

The tiny island Yorkshire newspaperman Brendon Grimshaw bought for £8,000 in 1962 and replanted with 16,000 trees; now its own national park, with free-roaming Aldabra giant tortoises, his grave, two 'pirate' graves, a thatched chapel and a small museum.

Practical

Coordinates from Wikipedia (4°37'10"S 55°30'31"E). About 9.9 ha; declared a national park in 2009 and run by the Moyenne Island Foundation. No jetty: you wade ashore, so expect wet feet. A loop trail of 30-60 minutes (SPGA says 30) passes beaches, lookouts, the graves and the tortoises; rocky and uphill in places. Pay the Ste Anne park fee (SCR 200) plus a separate Moyenne landing fee (amount not published; verify locally). The Jolly Roger is the island's only restaurant and serves tour groups at lunchtime. Hawksbill turtles nest on its beaches. No overnight stays.
