Astove Wall

10° 5.1′ S · 47° 43.3′ E · approximate

A 4-mile wall along Astove's west coast that drops from ankle-deep reef flat to over a kilometre, which IDC calls one of the two best wall dives in the world. Cousteau filmed parts of The Silent World along its edge.

Practical

Diving is run by Blue Safari from the Astove Coral House (November-April season per Divernet 2018). Named sites include Hammertime, where you drop to 20 m from an encrusted anchor chain of a 19th-century whaler and wait for scalloped hammerheads at dawn; The Mouth, the lagoon channel; and Sam's Ultimate, a soft-coral slope on the east side from 20 m. Visibility is often over 40 m, but thermoclines from about 10 m can drop the temperature by 4°C, and strong currents run almost daily. The nearest chamber is on Silhouette, about 2.5 hours by air. Pub. 171 describes no anchorage, and the reef is steep-to except on the SE side and off the N point. Coordinate is approximate: 0.2 nm off the west coast of the OpenStreetMap outline.
