Penelakut Island
48° 57.5′ N · 123° 38.9′ W
Penelakut Island, called Kuper Island until 2010, is home to the Penelakut Tribe and is reached by a small ferry from Chemainus. A Catholic residential school ran here from 1890 to 1978, and unmarked graves were identified near its site in 2021. Visitors by boat should treat the island as a private community.
Practical
Coordinate is the OSM island centroid. The island is Penelakut community land, not a park: do not land, walk, picnic or harvest shellfish ashore without the community's permission. Anchoring off its shores in Telegraph Harbour and Clam Bay is common, but keep noise down and respect the shoreline. The ferry runs between Chemainus and Telegraph Harbour; keep its route clear.
