Ganges Harbour Anchorage (Salt Spring Island)

48° 51.0′ N · 123° 29.6′ W · approximate

The long harbour leading to Ganges, Salt Spring's lively main town. Boats anchor in the inner harbour off the town and the Chain Islands and go ashore by dinghy for the market, galleries, restaurants and supermarkets.

Practical

Position is approximate, in the inner anchorage south-east of the town docks. Anchor in about 7.5-10.5 m (24-35 ft); all buoys in the harbour are private. Sheltered from most directions, but a southeaster blows up the length of the harbour and makes it choppy. Slow to 5 knots entering the harbour, then no wake. Floatplanes land and take off among moored boats: keep their lanes clear. Dinghy dock at Rotary Marine Park on the water side of Thrifty Foods. Pump-out at the harbour authority breakwater (Kanaka). Thrifty Foods and Country Grocer (which runs a shuttle to the marinas) for groceries; liquor, hardware and laundry in town. Chart 3478/3442.
