Bellingham Bay Anchorage (Bellingham)

48° 43.8′ N · 122° 32.4′ W · approximate

Bellingham Bay is wide and open with room to anchor almost anywhere south of the flats. It is a fallback rather than a destination: the mud is thin and holding is poor in a blow.

Practical

Position is approximate, mid-bay south-west of downtown. Depths mostly 6-15 fathoms (36-90 ft, 11-27 m) (Coast Pilot). The bottom is a thin layer of mud over hardpan, and boats tend to drag in heavy weather; the best holding is just north of Governors Point at the south end of Chuckanut Bay. A federal general anchorage and an explosives anchorage are charted in the bay (33 CFR 110.230). Crab pots fill the bay in season.
