Typhoon Season & Malampaya Typhoon Holes
10° 56.7′ N · 119° 21.0′ E · approximate
Palawan lies below the usual typhoon track, but not out of reach - Super Typhoon Rai (Odette) struck just south of El Nido in December 2021, and cruisers rode it out in Malampaya Sound.
Practical
Approx: plotted at the Hacking Family's Malampaya NE typhoon anchorage. Recognised holes: Malampaya NE (24 ft mud), Pirate's Hole, Taitai Bay (about 5 nm NW of Alligator Island) and Alligator Island. Late-season storms hit northern Palawan in November-December. Lessons from Rai: storm anchor plus two working anchors, heavy bridles, stay near mangroves out of the bounce of the islands.
