Alligator Island Anchorage (Malampaya Sound)

10° 50.8′ N · 119° 17.7′ E

The Southeast Asia Pilot's recommended all-conditions anchorage deep inside Malampaya Sound, with the river town of Calapa ashore and Mt Capoas towering over the sound.

Practical

Southeast Asia Pilot: 10°50.781'N 119°17.720'E, recommended for most conditions; the town of Calapa is ashore on the river. The pilot also lists Taitai Bay, about 5 nm NW of Alligator Island, as a hurricane hole where high surrounding hills keep the water calm. Inside the sound there is little fringing reef to worry about, but more plankton and non-stinging jellyfish; Pancol village deep in the sound has a concrete pier and sari-sari stores with ice and cold beer (undated sailor's blog; verify locally). Malampaya Sound is a protected landscape and seascape (since 2000) and home to the Philippines' only Irrawaddy dolphins.
