Typhoon Season and Shelter at Puerto Galera
13° 30.7′ N · 120° 57.3′ E
Tropical storms can strike in any month, but are most frequent April through November; Puerto Galera's landlocked harbour is where Philippine cruisers ride them out, on club moorings inspected every year.
Practical
Position: SEAP harbour position. PGYC weather page: amihan (NE monsoon) November-April, habagat (SW monsoon) May-October with a few weeks of variable winds between; typhoons most frequent April-November; free PGYC storm alerts on X/Twitter @pgycnews (#stormalertPH); recommended sources include JTWC and Windguru. PGYC says its moorings aim to hold even with a typhoon overhead (which it reports happened once in 25 years); Noonsite rates the mooring area typhoon- and lightning-safe but says check your own mooring. In Typhoon Ruby (December 2014) a ship and a barge dragged onto a sanctuary reef in Muelle Bay and more than 20 vessels typically crowd in during storms (GMA). Prep: double pennants to the chain, strip windage, and expect ferry and small-craft sailings to be suspended when PAGASA raises wind signals. Wikipedia climate: rain peaks June-September (about 410-466 mm a month), driest January-April.
