Siquijor, 'the Healing Island', marks Holy Week with its Healing Festival, when traditional healers prepare herbal medicines from roots and herbs gathered over the seven Fridays of Lent.

Practical

Position approx: Siquijor town church (the provincial capital); the festival venue is not given in our sources and changes, so ask the provincial tourism office. Siquijor provincial tourism site: a Healing Festival is normally celebrated every year during Holy Week; healers mix their concoctions on Black Saturday, a day of 'suspense, quiet and solemnity'. The tourism site also describes the Tuob fumigation ritual at Balay Pahauli in Cantabon, which uses ashes gathered only on Black Saturday. Dates follow Easter (March or April), within the north-east monsoon season. Book ferries and accommodation early over Holy Week, when Filipinos travel.
