Olango West Anchorage (Santa Rosa)

10° 16.4′ N · 124° 2.3′ E · approximate

A narrow sand shelf along the edge of Olango's western reef flat, just south-west of the long Santa Rosa ferry pier, in the lee of the island in the north-east monsoon - a day stop for the bird sanctuary, the Olango walls and the ferry to Mactan.

Practical

Approximate position derived from satellite imagery and OpenStreetMap: on the light-coloured shelf about 200 m south-west of the Santa Rosa pier head (pier head 10.2747°N 124.0409°E), where local bangkas moor; not a logged cruiser waypoint. A yacht-destination guide gives 'anchorage on the western side in 3-5 metres over sand' (single source - sound carefully). The shelf is narrow: drying reef flat lies inshore and the edge drops steeply into the deep Hilutungan Channel, so swing room is limited and the anchor can slide off the shelf - settled-weather daytime use, with a careful watch. Sheltered from NE-E winds; exposed to the W and SW (habagat) and to ferry and bangka wash. Keep the pier approach clear - passenger bangkas from Punta Engano arrive about every 30 minutes in daylight. Dinghy to the pier; the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary is a tricycle ride south, and Santa Rosa village has small stores and local eateries; no fuel or marine services were found.

Best for
