Caohagan Island

10° 12.2′ N · 124° 1.2′ E

A small inhabited island in the Olango group with a wide powdery beach, a marine sanctuary and a village seafood market - quieter than Nalusuan and Hilutungan.

Practical

About 658 residents (2024 census); households run on solar power. No scheduled boats - charter bangkas run from Cordova, Angasil and Marigondon. The island was hit by Typhoon Rai (Odette) in December 2021. Surrounded by reef flats - visit by dinghy at mid to high tide. Buy fish from the island's seafood market. Satellite imagery shows Caohagan sitting in the middle of the broad Olango reef flat, roughly 1 km inside the reef crest that drops into deep water to the south-east - there is no sheltered keel-boat anchorage nearby, so visit by dinghy from the Hilutungan/Nalusuan side at high water or by hired bangka. Seafood sellers on the beach were charging about 250 PHP per crab in 2017 (verify locally); the island gets crowded with tour groups at midday.
