Suwanee Reef

24° 23.0′ N · 110° 19.0′ W · approximate

The rock in the middle of Canal de San Lorenzo that sank the Salvatierra is now a shallow reef of coral heads and gorgonian walls with schools of jacks and hunting sea lions - snorkelable, with the top only about 6 ft down.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: read off the georeferenced zoning map of the CONANP Espíritu Santo park rules compendium, which labels the rock 'Roca Swany' (also the 'Bajo El Swany' traditional fishing polygon); dive operators publish it only as 'in San Lorenzo Channel' beside the Salvatierra wreck - consult a current chart, where the rock and its warning light are charted. Cortez Club: novice, max 35 ft, top at 6 ft. La Paz Divers: max 12 m, tidal currents at certain times, about 50 minutes from La Paz. It is a navigation hazard - stay in the marked San Lorenzo channel when under way.
