San Gabriel Pearl Farm Ruins

24° 25.4′ N · 110° 21.5′ W · approximate

Stone channels and walls of Gastón Vives' Compañía Criadora de Concha y Perla, which from 1903 to 1914 farmed millions of black-lip pearl oysters in the San Gabriel lagoon - now haunted by roosting frigatebirds.

Practical

Coordinate is approximate: placed on the south side of Bahía San Gabriel, where Baja by Sea locates the remnants of the old pearl fishery; not separately mapped. The Vivès brothers founded the company in 1896; at its height it had 8-10 million oysters on 120 hectares and 800-1,000 workers, using thatch-roofed canals in the mangrove lagoon. It ended during the Mexican Revolution. Land by dinghy at high water (the bay is shallow); stay on paths and away from nesting birds. Inside Archipiélago Espíritu Santo National Park: every person aboard needs the daily CONANP bracelet (225 MXN/person/day on the CONANP page) or an annual Conservation Passport.
