Playa Las Gatas

17° 37.3′ N · 101° 33.2′ W

Boat-access-only beach across the bay from town, sheltered by the remains of a stone breakwater believed to have been built by a Tarascan ruler to make a calm bathing pool. Clear water inside the reef line, palapa bars and a steady parade of water taxis by day.

Practical

Position from OpenStreetMap. Reach it by dinghy or by water taxi from the municipal pier (tickets at the kiosk in town). Snorkel inside the old breakwater; stay out of the water-taxi landing area. Palapas such as Amado's serve drinks and seafood; Hilda and Ismael supply the beach bars and will deliver to boats. The path to the Punta Garrobo lighthouse is closed (private land, guarded, per a 2011 report). Busiest midday; deserted by dusk.
