La Manzanilla Crocodile Sanctuary
19° 17.2′ N · 104° 47.3′ W
An estuary sanctuary (Cocodrilario) at the edge of La Manzanilla where dozens of American crocodiles bask on the mud banks a few feet from the boardwalk, with roseate spoonbills and herons in the mangroves.
Practical
At the northwest end of town, a short walk from the beach. A few pesos' donation is requested at the entrance (2013; verify locally). Wikipedia cites about 300 American crocodiles in the sanctuary. Stay behind the barriers: crocodiles move fast when startled. A small mangrove museum displays crocodile skeletons.
Best for
Seeing big crocodiles up close on a provisioning run
